Music genre is defined as a category
of music that depends on the region where the music grows up. Region or geographical
origin influences the genre of the music because every region has their own
tradition. According to Wikipedia, musical techniques, the style, the cultural
context, and the content and spirit of the themes are the classifications to
identify the variety of music genre. Background of the listeners influences the
music genre that people listen to. People can decide the genre of the music
that either they like or dislike, because choosing the genre of the music is a
freedom. Nowadays, music rapidly develops that is comparable with the development
of the era. It can be proven by the genre itself which is quite different with
music in neither 1980s nor 1990s. People can be more expressive to create and
produce music and it appears the advantages and disadvantages of the music
itself especially for the listeners who directly get the impact of listening
music.
Listeners will get
advantages, they are brain
development, speech and memory development, and also their emotion control. First
advantage, music influences the development of human brain. According
to Elena Mannes’s
book titled “The Power Of Music”
sees so much potential in music’s power to change the brain and influence how
the brain works which have been proven by scientists. Scientists,
that Mannes says in her book, have
found that the parts of the brain are more stimulated by music than another
part of human function. Second advantage is speech and memory development will
be increased by listening music. Mannes in her book also adds that a stroke patient who has lost verbal
function can be helped by a technique, known as melodic intonation therapy. It
works in stimulating the human brain portions taking over for those that are
damaged. It helps the stroke patients to regain their speaking ability. Mannes
in “The Power of Music”
also says that melodic intonation therapy or such kind of therapy will help Alzheimer
patient because people associate music with memory. An additional useful study
reveals that Alzheimer's patients recall words to familiar songs much better
than spoken words or information. McCaffrey and Locsin (2004) in Mannes’s book tells that in fact, they tend to recall words from songs about 62%
of the time, while they only remember spoken material about 37% of the time. Listening
music, especially melancholic songs, will flash back people’s memory, then they
will remember incident in the past. Children also get the advantage of
listening music. They will memorize the lesson faster by either listening music
or singing a song.
The disadvantages of music for listeners
are getting stressed and having bad attitude after listening to music. The
first disadvantage that is people get stressed when listening music, especially
hard rock music, has been proven by Dr. John Diamond
in Mannes’s book. He uses
hard rock music for his experiment, because it has stopped anapaestic beat,
consists of two rapid beats followed by a long beat then a pause. People immediately
lose muscles strength and have to lower their arms. It interrupts the natural
rhythm of the heart causing stress to the body. Muscles in the body will go
weak when people listen to hard rock music. The second disadvantage is having
bad attitude that has been found by a research. Music with violent, sexist, or
homophobic lyrics influences teens and vulnerable children. Heavy metal music
that they listen to gives the negative effect during their adolescence, such as
drugs abuse, psychiatric disorders, suicide risk, or risk-taking behaviours.
In conclusion, music can either heal
or be harmful because listening music has positive and negative effect for the
listeners. Positive effects of listening music give huge benefits especially in
the healthy aspect. Negative effects influence the human mind and affect the
human behaviour.
